As truth-seekers and conscious individuals, we strive to uncover the secrets to living a fulfilling and rich life. In our quest for personal growth, we often overlook two simple yet powerful practices: journaling and meditation. These practices, when cultivated intentionally, can transform our mental well-being and pave the way to unshakable happiness.
Before I dive into the details of these specific practices and how they directly impact your personal growth and happiness, it is important to first note that these practices only take you as far as you're willing to let them take you. Meaning that before you start to meditate and journal daily, you first need to shift your mindset. Whether it's called, glass half full, optimistic, or open minded, you must allow your mind to expand past your current beliefs and experiences. In order to unlock your full potential you must first build a strong and sturdy foundation. And that is a positive mindset.
Developing a Positive Mindset
Nurturing a positive outlook requires consistent effort and practice. It isn't something you can just change in a couple of minutes. Developing a strong foundation requires you to quite literally unroot the past negative roots that have grown inside of your brain. Fortunately though this is something that everyone on this planet is capable off. Doesn't matter your sex, economic status, race, or religion. All that matters is that you are willing to consciously make the decision to improve your life by first changing the way you perceive life.
Some practical implications of changing your mindset include:
1. Reframe negative thoughts: Whenever a negative thought arises, challenge it and replace it with a more positive or balanced view. And ask yourself, how did this negative thought arrive in my mind?
2. Surround yourself with positive influences: Energy is infectious. Being around uplifting people will undoubtedly increase your overall morale. And it works both ways with negative people, their negativity will bring you down. Choose to spend time with people who uplift and inspire you, and distance yourself from negativity.
3. Incorporate positive affirmations: Use daily affirmations to reinforce your positive beliefs and remind yourself of your strengths and accomplishments. Speak your dreams and aspirations into existence. You are actually able to trick your mind into believing the words you say to yourself. Use this to your advantage.
My Personal Journey with Gratitude and Positive Thinking
In my pursuit of self-awareness and personal growth, I've made it a priority to focus on gratitude and positive thinking. These practices have not only helped me take control of my emotions but also allowed me to spread love and peace to those around me. I've seen firsthand how gratitude can transform relationships and how positive thinking can open new doors in both personal and professional aspects of life.
During the summer of 2021 I found myself oftentimes lost in my thoughts, and I decided to write down my thoughts and feelings in a notebook. While I failed to stay consistent with this at the time, I still found clarity in my thoughts by just simply writing them down. Going into 2022, I wanted to do something that I had never done before. And that was a nightly journal every night. For 365 I successfully accounted for 1 journal every night. From what started off as me just trying something different, journaling had turned into an anchor in my life. Journaling is something that keeps me grounded, humble, and grateful. It helps me become more aware of my actions from a macro perspective. And oftentimes whenever I have an unproductive week/period, it is always reflected in my nightly journals. They are either short, or very repetitive and almost like I just wrote them so I could go to bed. And most times, it is exactly like that. Unproductive me puts little to no effort in my journals. My journals are a record of my perceived experiences and hold me accountable. I highly recommend every individual to have a nightly gratitude journal.
Another habit I picked up during 2022 was meditating. I started off in the summer of 2022 by just going along with meditation youtube video guides. Then as I got better and better at clearing my mind and being in a state of stillness, I began to meditate freely by listening to guideless meditation tunes. Meditating brings the same clarity that journaling brings but also calms down my entire body. Meditating gives me a chance to analyze situations from all possible angles. It gives me a chance to breathe out all of my anxieties and worries. Meditation is therapy for the soul and mind. Especially in a time like 2023, where people are always engaged in something on their phones.
My experiences with meditation and journaling has left me with a few new principles:
Nobody is inherently a bad person. Everyone is a product of their growing environment and culture. Sure people are born with certain personality traits, but overall the most important factor is the growing environment and culture around them.
Spread love and abstain from hate. Hate is a double edged sword. The times where you feel as if you have been wronged and deserve to spew out your anger, it is important to remember that you must show love back. Do not let hate consume you.
Happiness is a choice. It isn't something that you should hope to have. If you are unhappy, you always have the ability to be grateful. You can always be grateful. If you are even reading this, you should be grateful. What if you were blind? What if you never had access to education? What if you didn't have access to the internet? And the list goes on and on. There is always something you can be grateful for.
True happiness can only be attained when your at peace with yourself. You must be at peace that some things are out of your control. But with that being said, it is even more important to realize the things you CAN control. And that is your actions, and the thoughts you let govern your life. Will your mind be governed by thoughts filled with positivity, improvement, and love? Or will you let your mind be governed by thoughts filled with instant gratification, fear, and hate? It is your choice.
